Islamic Relief’s first ever intervention was in Sudan in 1984, helping people affected by the devastating famine in the region.
In the 3 decades since, we have provided emergency aid when disaster strikes and launched long-term development initiatives.
We support rural health centres and schools across the country, help farmers adapt to climate change, train youth with skills for better livelihoods, and promote local peacebuilding initiatives.
We put women’s rights at the heart of our work, supporting a centre for survivors of sexual violence in Darfur and running community campaigns that change attitudes to female genital mutilation (FGM).
We currently work in 7 states across the country – Blue Nile, Central Darfur, Gedaref, North and West Kordofan, Red Sea and Sennar.
Relentless conflict
In April 2023, a horrific war erupted in the capital, Khartoum, which has since spread across the country. The fighting has created one of the world’s biggest humanitarian crises, with millions of people forced to flee their homes. The country on the brink of famine and children face starvation.
Over the past year Islamic Relief has supported more than 1.2 million people affected by this crisis. We’re distributing food, cash, water and dignity kits to families who have lost their homes and livelihoods and providing farmers with high quality climate-smart seeds. We’re supporting health centres and nutritional feeding centres that help malnourished children and pregnant women, and we’ve equipped 62 hospitals and health clinics in 3 states
People have suffered unimaginable violence and trauma, so we also run mental health and psychosocial support projects which we are keen to expand as our work in Sudan continues.
