In El-Souki, Sudan, many vulnerable communities lacked the healthcare they desperately needed. Kidney patients did not have access to dialysis equipment, and many lost their lives as a result. Islamic Relief is running a project to help equip El-Souki Health Centre with essential medical equipment.
“I had to rent a house to get treatment”
“It started with a fever and my family immediately rushed me to the hospital. The doctor diagnosed me with kidney failure”, says 67-year-old Amna from El-Souki.
“For 3 years I had my dialysis treatment in Sinja city because we did not have a dialysis center in El-Souki. It was challenging because Sinja is an hour’s drive away.
“Also, the road between the two places is inaccessible during the rainy season, forcing me to rent a house in Sinja, which I struggled to afford. Thanks to Islamic Relief, I am now able to receive my treatent at El-Souki Heath Centre and I receive dialysis treatment here twice a week”, she says.
” I hope to complete Hajj”
“My family were worried and thought I was dead after I went into a coma and lost consciousness. My whole body was swollen”, says 52-year-old Soad from El-Souki.
“I went to see a doctor in Sinja and was transferred to Madani city where I was diagnosed with kidney failure. I started dialysis treatment in Sinja, but the machines were not working.
“Sometimes we don’t have food to eat and my son’s income is unreliable. I used to sell sweet dough balls as a source of income but I got too sick to even do any chores around the house”, says Soad, describing how she struggles to meet her basic needs.
“Now I regularly receive the treatment I need at Elsouki Health Centre. I receive good care from staff and the treatment is free. I hope that my heath is restored, so that I am able to achieve my lifelong dream of completing Hajj”.
Saving kidney patients’ lives
El-Souki Health Centre is the only healthcare provider in the area which offers dialysis treatment.
“Patients used to travel for hours to get their dialysis treatment before El-Souki Health Centre was fully functional. Some patients passed away because they were too sick to travel. Others could not afford to travel for treatment”, says Elsadig, the centre manager.
“Now, kidney patients are receiving the treatment they need close to home, at El-Souki Health Centre. Islamic Relief has facilitated dialysis training for El-Souki Health Centre’s staff, including me. Your support has saved the lives of our patients”, he says.
In total, Islamic Relief’s project in El-Souki has provided essential medical treatment to nearly 16,000 people in the area. As well as dialysis treatment, we have also equipped the health centre with essential medicines.
“I wish blessings and goodness upon the people who supported us. They have eased our suffering”, says Amna.
Islamic Relief also runs healthcare projects in Central Darfur and Khartoum states, providing essential drugs and medical equipment to health centres and hospitals.
