Carolina, a woman caught in Venezuela’s twin earthquakes on 24 July, tells Islamic Relief that the force of the quakes threw her against the walls of her home.
“The walls cracked and that crack jammed the door shut and we just could not open it. So, we put ourselves in God’s hands.”
Carolina is among the survivors Islamic Relief has been supporting with food packs, hygiene items and other essentials.
She and her family recently spent the night in the Museum of Architecture in the capital, Caracas, alongside 60 other families. About 300 people also spent the night in a public square in temporary shelters and tents.
Families like Carolina’s are in desperate need of shelter and portable bathrooms.
“We are asking for tents because we don’t know how long it will take for repairs to the building,” Carolina says.
Islamic Relief delivers lifesaving aid
The death toll has risen to more than 2,500, while over 11,000 people have been injured.
Over 96,000 buildings are believed to have been damaged or destroyed, and 680,000 children are in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the United Nations.
Islamic Relief staff are on the ground supporting survivors. We have been conducting needs assessments, visiting a refugee centre in Caracas that is now a temporary home for 4,000 people.
Food shortages are being reported across La Guaira state, the region hardest hit by the quakes.
Working with partners, we are distributing food and hygiene packs to families who have lost their homes.
The packs include enough food, hygiene and household items to help feed families for a week.
