More than 50 people have been killed and over 1.2 million people in Bangladesh have been affected by heavy rains that have caused widespread flooding in the south-eastern Bangladesh. Approximately 45,000 people have also been uprooted from their homes.
Five days of continuous raining, that began on 5 August 2023, led to flash flooding in Bandarban, Chattogram, and Rangamati district, causing damage to shelters, roads and important infrastructure.
Cox’s Bazaar, home to the world’s largest refugee camp containing over one million people, was also affected by the floods. The fragile infrastructure of some of the Rohingya refugee camps has been impacted. Approximately, 2,700 Rohingya shelters were affected, with some completely destroyed by the floods, with some water, sanitation and hygiene facilities also heavily damaged.
The rains have mostly stopped now and the forecast for the coming week looks favourable, but there is much work to be done to help those affected by the floods to recover.
Given our presence, our current focus is on providing emergency shelter materials, including bamboo, tarpaulin, rope and metal sheeting to hundreds of affected families in Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar.
Islamic Relief teams are also distributing water and ready-to-eat food. We are also sending teams to assist with community clean-up and decontamination efforts.
