Since fighting erupted more than 16 months ago, Sudan has been transformed into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
A catastrophic situation that has seen more than 10 million people displaced and 15,000 people killed is getting worse, as the combined effects of climate change and the outbreaks of disease has added to the problems faced by the people of Sudan.
Millions of lives are at risk.
Famine and malnutrition
After nearly a year and a half of violent conflict, Sudan faces the worst levels of food insecurity in its history. More than half of its population – 25.6 million people – are experiencing extreme levels of food insecurity.
Famine conditions have been reported in an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in North Darfur State, the first time conditions this poor have been reported globally since 2017.
It has been reported that other IDP camps across the country could soon be experiencing similar conditions.
And as these problems worsen, the fighting wages on.
Increasing the heavy burden
Since the beginning of the rainy season in June 2024, heavy rains and flooding have caused havoc displacing hundreds of thousands of people, damaging infrastructure, affecting road access, and increasing the risk of waterborne diseases.
The damage done to roads is having a knock-on effect on the delivery of humanitarian aid, with the World Food Programme (WFP) reporting complications in delivering much needed food.
More than 440,000 people have been affected. Many of these families have had to move for the third, fourth or even more times.
A further issue facing the people of Sudan is the declaration of an outbreak of cholera, affecting 5 states and killing 112 people so far.
Maintaining our support
Since the conflict started in April 2023, Islamic Relief has worked to provide aid to more than 978,500 people.
We are supporting health centres and nutritional feeding centres which support malnourished children and pregnant women. We are providing food, water and cash to displaced people, alongside thousands of hygiene kits and dignity kits.
Due to the damage done to the agricultural sector in Sudan, we have distributed food packs, agro-produce and seeds to farmers.
We are also providing cash assistance to nearly 3,000 households across Central Darfur, Gedaref and Port Sudan, giving vulnerable people the freedom and flexibility to meet their own needs.
Islamic Relief continues to support the people of Sudan in their time of greatest need. Please help us to continue this life-saving work. Donate now.
