The board of Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) have acted swiftly and decisively in the light of historic social media posts by a trustee that were offensive and unacceptable, and in no way reflect the views and core values of the organisation.
A number of posts made in 2014 and 2015 on the personal Facebook account of Dr Almoutaz Tayara contravene the values of IRW, and Dr Tayara will play no further part in the governance of IRW.
Dr Tayara, a trustee of both Islamic Relief Worldwide and its independent affiliate Islamic Relief Germany, accepts that the posts were inappropriate and unacceptable and has said he is “deeply ashamed” of his comments. He apologised to IR Germany for his posts in 2017 when they first came to light in Germany. At that time he withdrew the posts and shut his Facebook account. IR Germany accepted his apology and instituted a new Code of Conduct.
IRW first became aware of the posts on 17 August 2020. As a result, Almoutaz Tayara immediately resigned from the IRW board. Dr Tayara is also stepping down from the board of the International Waqf Fund – IRW’s specialist subsidiary for charitable investments.
An entirely new IRW board is being elected by a new International General Assembly that is meeting for the first time on 22 August under far-reaching governance reforms.
IRW is conducting a wholesale review of its vetting and screening processes for trustee and senior executive appointments and a review of other policies, including its social media policies, to ensure that its values are upheld. It is working with and taking advice from the Charity Commission in seeking to put in place appropriate vetting and screening procedures and social media policies.
Dr Tayara’s deleted posts in no way reflect the views or position of Islamic Relief Worldwide, which is a purely humanitarian organisation with no political affiliations. We work to uphold the highest humanitarian standards of neutrality, impartiality and independence, assisting people of all faiths and none, without discrimination by race, religion, gender or sexual orientation.
We reject and condemn terrorism and believe that all forms of discrimination – including anti-Semitism – are unacceptable. These values are fundamental to our organisation, our donors and the people we serve.
