As the cost of living has risen in Bosnia over the past 5 years, Hasena has found it increasingly difficult to provide for her children.
The single mother lives in the city of Zenica, with her son Alen and her daughter Indira, who has a disability. Indira’s condition requires her mother’s constant care, meaning Hasena, 56, is unable to work, and the family relies on Alen’s small income to cover bills each month.
There has never been any money to send Alen to school, however, so his employment prospects are limited.
The family are finding it increasingly difficult to pay for food each month, with Hasena often skipping meals so her children can eat.
“I am afraid it will have a negative effect on my daughter’s already declining health. I am getting older and find that not having enough food affects the way that I am able to care for her.
“At least once a week I do not eat, as it is more important for Indira to eat,” Hasena says.
A big help at an important time of the year
Ramadan is a time of celebration in her community, but Hasena is usually unable to afford to participate in events in her neighbourhood.
In the past, she has only been able to have an iftar meal, often having to skip suhoor.
In 2023, Hasena received food parcels from Islamic Relief enabling her to prepare both suhoor and iftar for her family, something she is incredibly grateful for.
“Islamic Relief has allowed me to fulfil my obligations as a Muslim during this blessed month.”
Islamic Relief’s Ramadan food distribution support vulnerable people across the world, like Hasena every year, helping them to feed their families during the holy month.
This Ramadan please help us to reach even more people in need. Please donate.
