The blessed occasions of Ramadan and Eid are times of generosity and compassion. As Muslims around the world fast from dawn to dusk, we are reminded of the millions of people across the world experiencing hunger and thirst. This Ramadan, Islamic Relief supported Yemeni families in need through 3 distribution programmes: Ramadan food packages, zakat al-Fitr food parcels for Eid, and Eid al-Fitr gifts for orphaned children.

In Yemen, millions of people are in need of humanitarian aid following a decade of crisis. During this time, Yemenis have weathered the worst cholera outbreak in modern history, malnutrition and severe economic decline. As conditions continue to deteriorate, Islamic Relief remains steadfast in our commitment to providing lifesaving and lifechanging support to vulnerable people in Yemen.

To help families impacted by this crisis, Islamic Relief delivered food parcels in March as part of our annual Ramadan programme, ensuring they had nutritious food to break their fast with.

We provided food vouchers to over 8,000 individuals across Sana’a, Aden and Taiz, which they could use to purchase various food items such as wheat, rice, eggs, tuna, red beans and dates.

Towards the end of Ramadan, Islamic Relief distributed zakat al-fitr food packs to over 1,000 individuals from Taiz, focusing on those most in need, including the families of orphaned children. More than 8,300 children in Yemen are supported through our Orphan Sponsorship Programme. Children enrolled in the programme receive a monthly stipend to pay for essentials, and their families also receive support through our seasonal distribution’s programmes.

The zakat al-Fitr food packs included oil, rice, pasta, beans, flour, sugar and salt, providing families with the key ingredients to ensure they could have an enjoyable and nutritious meal on Eid.

To celebrate the joyous occasion of Eid al-Fitr, Islamic Relief gifted presents to over 2,000 orphaned children in Sana’a, including pretty dresses to wear on Eid day, when it is customary to wear one’s best clothes. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)’s companion Jabir (RA) reported: “The Prophet (PBUH) had a cloak which he used to wear on the 2 Eid days and Fridays.”

Children enjoy new clothes for Eid. For many, these would have been the first new clothes they had worn in a long time. Islamic Relief’s commitment to bringing smiles to the faces of children and young people who have grown up in a nationwide crisis drives us to continue working to make a difference in the lives of people that rely on our support.
As the crisis in Yemen continues, please support Islamic Relief to continue our work assisting those in need in Yemen and beyond. Please donate to our Yemen Emergency Appeal today.
