After conflict forced them to flee their Somali home, Abdulkadir and his family were facing a very different Ramadan.
Before becoming displaced, Abdulkadir, 23, supported his wife and 2 children by working as a barber, mason and carpenter.
However, he severely injured his leg when being forced from his home, leaving him unable to work as before.
“We don’t get enough food, we don’t get clean water, we eat and drink what we get,” he says.
A different Ramadan
During Ramadan, Abdulkadir usually prays Tarawih every night and spends most of his time at his local mosque, but last year, he and his family were staying in an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp and everything is different.
Combined with the uncertainty that comes with limited access to food and water, Abdulkadir worried about experiencing a Ramadan like never before.
That was when Abdulkadir came into contact with Islamic Relief’s Ramadan food distribution.
With a big smile, he explains, “This Ramadan we didn’t have anything, but Alhamdulillah Islamic Relief has supported us with food packs, and now we are very happy.
“These Food Packs really help us, so we don’t need to worry about food for this month.”
Islamic Relief’s Ramadan programme in Somalia delivers packs containing staple food ingredients such as rice, sugar, and flour, as well as dates and cooking oil. Our seasonal programmes provide a lifeline to vulnerable families, like Abdulkadir’s, helping keep people well fed at this important time of year.
