In March 2026, Islamic Relief USA filed a lawsuit against Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW), making several claims against IRW which the organisation has contested.
On 15 July, the US District Court for the Southern District of New York ruled that IRW’s motion to compel the case to arbitration ‘strongly appears meritorious’. As such, the Court has put a stay on proceedings and ordered both parties to pursue the dispute resolution mechanisms stipulated in Islamic Relief’s Members Agreement – something IRW has consistently and strongly advocated from the very outset.
In response to the Court’s ruling, Islamic Relief Worldwide has issued the following statement:
Islamic Relief Worldwide welcomes the decision of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York to refer the current matter between Islamic Relief Worldwide and Islamic Relief USA to the dispute resolution mechanisms that we have consistently sought to pursue.
Islamic Relief Worldwide has always maintained throughout these proceedings that any issues of dispute between the parties should never have been litigated in court. We now hope to work with Islamic Relief USA to resolve any outstanding matters through that process, in the good-faith, collaborative spirit both organisations committed to.
Islamic Relief Worldwide continues to believe that the millions of rightsholders who depend on the Islamic Relief family are best served when that family combines its resources, works at scale, and stands together — and our focus remains, as it always has, on the vulnerable people around the world who depend on our work.
