Thousands of people uprooted by Tropical Storm Nalgae in the Philippines are to receive life-saving aid from Islamic Relief.
The storm, known locally as Paeng, has battered much of the Philippines with strong winds and heavy rains resulting in landslides and over 554 flooding incidents in various areas across the country.
It has resulted in the overflow of the Nituan river which flooded low-lying areas. The torrential rain has also caused landslides in areas such as Upi, Datu Blah Sinsuat, and Datu Odin Sinsuat.
Tropical Storm Nalgae has severely impacted the livelihoods of residents living in Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), which includes areas such as Bangsamoro, Maguindanao and neighbouring areas such as Cotabato City and Special Geographic Area (SGA). Over 300 barangays (villages) have been adversely affected. There have been over 50 deaths reported so far with 12 individuals also missing.
The houses of many affected by Nalgae were swept away by the ensuing flood, leaving some people sheltering in evacuation camps where there are no sources of drinking water and no functional latrines.
Islamic Relief is responding to the humanitarian emergency by providing emergency assistance to 1,000 families, providing them with food packs containing such as rice, sugar, coffee, sardines, oil and bihon (noodles). Each family is also receiving 2 gallons of safe drinking water, along with containers and other hygiene essentials.
