As severe flooding overwhelms communities in northern Bosnia, Islamic Relief is responding with vital aid.
A state of natural disaster has been declared in Una Sana Canton, where around 1,200 buildings have been inundated, along with swathes of agricultural land. Some communities have been completely cut off by the floodwaters, schools have closed, and hospitals have also been affected.
Thankfully, heavy rains have eased and floodwaters are beginning to recede – but there are fears that drinking water sources may become contaminated, leading to disease outbreaks in affected areas.
Islamic Relief has been working in Bosnia and Herzegovina since 1992, when we were among the first international agencies providing humanitarian aid during the Bosnian War. We have been closely monitoring the unfolding situation, and readying to provide vital aid in coordination with national and local authorities in Bihac and Bosanska Krupa.
Our focus will likely be on distributing water, ready-to-eat food and blankets, where possible prioritising remote villages that have been cut off. We also plan to help with community clean-up and decontamination efforts, and support local people to de-humidify affected homes.
