Beirut is in a state of shock after a severe escalation in violence saw airstrikes hit the Lebanese capital, on 30 July.
Ten people have been confirmed dead and 74 more injured.
Islamic Relief is carefully monitoring the situation and preparing to assist with humanitarian aid to help those affected by the conflict in Lebanon.
The impact of ongoing hostilities
According to the United Nations, nearly 99,000 people have been forced from their homes in the south of Lebanon and leave their livelihoods behind due to the ongoing hostilities in the region that began in early October 2023.
The majority of the newly displaced have arrived in the cities of Sour, Nabatieh, Saida, Baabda, and Beirut, where they are in desperate need of safe shelter, food items, as well personal hygiene items.
Due to the escalation in violence, international embassies have advised their citizens to leave Lebanon and avoid travelling to the country, which is now considered high risk.
Delivering aid
The attack comes amid a dire humanitarian situation in Lebanon, which is weathering a years-long economic crisis.
Islamic Relief has completed initial assessments and we are planning to deliver food parcels, vouchers and cash-based food assistance to people in need. Soap and nappies, menstrual products, mattresses and blankets will also be distributed.
Islamic Relief has been working as part of a coordinated response since the escalation began 9 months ago, collaborating with UN agencies, international non-governmental organisations and government authorities to provide much needed assistance.
Since October 2023, we have provided more than 2,300 food parcels, 300 blankets and 300 mattresses, along with more than 1,200 hygiene kits in the cities of Sour, Baalbek, Bekaa, Nabatieh and Hasbaya.
Islamic Relief also reached out to displaced Lebanese communities as part of our Eid-ul-Adha programme, providing 500 households with fresh meat packs.
Islamic Relief first started working in Lebanon in 2006, supporting those affected by the Lebanon War. Islamic Relief was one of the frontline respondents during the 2020 Beirut blast, cholera outbreak, Covid-19 pandemic and many other crises. We have rebuilt hospitals and repaired damaged water facilities in rural and urban areas, provided clean energy solutions through solar systems and assisted Syrian refugees in Lebanon for over a decade.
As the needs of communities in Lebanon increase, Islamic Relief will liaise with the government and relevant ministries and work with local authorities to increase our emergency response.
