Islamic Relief is scaling up efforts to help Afghan refugees returning from Pakistan following mass return orders.
According to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), an estimated 1.6 million Afghans are expected to return to Afghanistan.
As of 11 April, more than 51,500 people have crossed into Afghanistan via the Torkham border in Nangarhar province. On 11 April alone, over 7,000 individuals returned.
The high volume of returnees, and the limited facilities in designated camps and at the border, means returnees are facing severe shortages of food, clean water, sanitation and other essentials.
There is an urgent need for a coordinated, scaled-up humanitarian response to support those arriving in Afghanistan, and to facilitate their basic needs and resettle.
Islamic Relief’s response
Islamic Relief will coordinate with United Nations agencies such as the World Food Programme and IOM to support those in need.
We are preparing to provide returnees with emergency shelter and other necessary items, as well as facilitating access to safe sanitation facilities including toilets, handwashing facilities and safe drinking water.
Islamic Relief has been working in Afghanistan since 1992, providing emergency relief, healthcare, food and shelter to vulnerable communities.
