Islamic Relief is responding to the catastrophic floods that struck northeast Nigeria earlier this week.
On 10 September, heavy rainfall caused a dam located in central Borno State, to collapse, creating an enormous surge of water that submerged much of the state capital, Maiduguri, damaging buildings and infrastructure.
The floods have killed at least 30 people, forced 400,000 to leave their homes, and destroyed thousands of houses.
Officials say death toll is likely to rise as thousands of people remain trapped in their homes awaiting rescue.
An immediate response
The flooding in Borno State has affected 1 million people and it is the worst flooding in the state in 2 decades. With the floods striking during a food emergency, food and clean water are in sharp demand.
Islamic Relief is working with local partners to respond to the disaster. We are preparing to distribute food packs to affected households in Maiduguri, with a view to expanding our emergency response in the coming weeks.
Islamic Relief is in contact with local authorities and our partners on the ground to evaluate the ongoing situation and assess needs.
