Islamic Relief is preparing to respond to very heavy rain which has triggered flash flooding in various parts of Yemen, including Hodeida governorate.
At least 30 people have been killed and over 37,700 are estimated to have been affected by the rains, which began on 6 August.
Homes, farms and infrastructure have been damaged in Hodeida, where some of those affected had been living in tents that have now been washed away. Hundreds of people have been displaced and the flooding has also caused power outages.
Islamic Relief is active in Hodeida, where we run projects on food, livelihoods, health and water, sanitation and hygiene. We are well placed to respond to this emergency and are planning to distribute essential items to meet affected people’s most pressing needs.
Shelter, food, clean water, sanitation and hygiene items are in sharp demand. Islamic Relief will work with other agencies to determine where our support is most needed, with an aim to begin distributions in the coming couple of days.
The floods come a week after 15 people in the southwestern city of Taiz were killed during heavy rains, which also damaged homes and infrastructure. Yemen’s rainy season begins in late March, with rains intensifying throughout July and August.
Yemen is already grappling with a humanitarian crisis, which has left tens of thousands of people displaced and infrastructure severely weakened.
Islamic Relief has been supporting the people of Yemen since 1998. Please help us to continue our vital work assisting communities affected by disaster in Yemen and beyond. Donate now.
