Islamic Relief is preparing to respond as torrential rain and flooding hits southeastern Morocco.
At least 11 people have been killed and 9 more are missing since the rains began battering the provinces of Tata, Tiznit and Errachidia on 7 September.
Some areas have experienced the equivalent of half their regular annual rainfall in just a number of days. 250mm and 203mm were recorded in Tata and Tinghir respectively, with Figuig measuring 114mm and Ouarzazate 82mm.
Media outlets are reporting damage to at least 40 homes, as well as roads, while electricity, water and telecommunications networks have also been disrupted in several villages.
The full extent of the damage is expected to become clearer as local authorities and non-governmental organisations continue their assessments.
Islamic Relief’s response
Islamic Relief is operational through local partners in the affected areas and is preparing to support those impacted by the heavy rains.
Our immediate response will include distributing blankets, mattresses, food packs and ready-to-eat meals in Tata province.
The flooding comes as Morocco marks one year since a series of earthquakes devastated communities in the country’s mountainous central region. Islamic Relief continues to work with our local partners to support communities still recovering from the earthquakes.
