Islamic Relief is today launching an emergency appeal to support those affected by the double earthquake in Venezuela.
On the evening of 24 June 2026, 2 powerful earthquakes occurred within 40 seconds. The second quake was one of the strongest tremors to hit Venezuela in a century, at a magnitude of 7.5.
At least 164 people have been confirmed killed so far, and over 1,000 individuals have been injured, but numbers are expected to rise rapidly. Leading global authority the US Geological Survey has warned the death toll could exceed 10,000.
Two earthquakes hit Venezuela in under a minute
Significant destruction has been reported in the capital Caracas and surrounding areas, where dozens of buildings have collapsed. Caracas International Airport has been closed due to damage.
Power, water, gas, and communications services have been disrupted across affected areas.
The La Guaira region in the north of Venezuela has been declared a “disaster zone” due to the extent of the damage.
The government of Venezuela has declared a nationwide state of emergency. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with teams searching for any survivors under the rubble. Islamic Relief will be working with partners and local authorities to deliver lifesaving aid, with people expected to need urgent food, shelter, water, healthcare and cash.
