Rescue operations are ongoing in the wake of the deadly earthquake that struck Indonesia last weekend. The magnitude 7.7-earthquake struck the island of Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, on Saturday 15 August. Tremors were felt in neighbouring West Nusa Tenggara and parts of southern Sulawesi.
The destruction from the quake and subsequent aftershocks has been widespread and devastating – homes and villages across the affected regions have been razed to the ground and families’ livelihoods have been left covered by rubble.
Aftershocks continue to shake the area – more than 1,600 have been recorded to date – causing panic among survivors.
The earthquake has killed 70 people according to the latest reports from Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA). More than 1,100 people have been injured, while the total number of missing is unknown but thought to be high.
Displacement figures are staggering, with the NDMA reporting that more than 40,000 people now sheltering in various evacuation locations.
Vital aid
Islamic Relief has been closely coordinating with partners on the ground and the NDMA to get help to people affected by the disaster.
Our initial response has included delivering drinking water and food to a displacement camp in East Nusa Tenggara’s Sikka District. Moving forward, we are planning on delivering water, food packages, tarpaulins, blankets, hygiene kits, and other essential items, to survivors.
The humanitarian needs across East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara and southern Sulawesi remain huge and we will be looking to expand our operations in the coming weeks.
With your help and your generous donations, we reach families whose lives have been ripped apart by this disaster. Donate to Islamic Relief’s Global Emergency fund today.
