Islamic Relief (IR) hosted a high-level consultation on the topic of gender justice. The consultation was attended by academics, activists, practitioners and professionals from various backgrounds including UN bodies, universities, NGOs, and faith organisations.
The consultation discussed some of the most pressing matters affecting women and girls all over the world. The participants were pleased that an organisation like IR was working to develop policies and programmes in this area. Dr Azza Karam (Senior Adviser – United Nations Population Fund) stated that:
“This is a genuinely historic moment, and I appreciate all the efforts involved in putting this event together. It feels like an important tipping point in Islamic engagement.”
This strategic learning exercise brought together a range of actors with the aim of developing in-depth analyses and holistic solutions. Youssef Himmat (Forum of European Muslim Youth and Student Organisations) was enthused by the fact that many young people were involved in the consultation. He said:
“…the issue of gender justice is increasingly relevant and it needs to be addressed on a local and global scale. Despite the youth being seen as future leaders, seldom are they consulted on matters that affect them. So I’m happy to see young people from a variety of organisations here and I’m glad that this consultation is inclusive.”
Islamic Relief recognises that gender inequality is one of the most severe forms of discrimination in the world. It affects women and girls of all ages, backgrounds and ethnicities. It is a major cause of global poverty as well as a whole host of other social ills.
Islamic Relief is dedicated to serving all humanity. The exchange of ideas, constructive dialogue, and strategic planning from this event will help inform our policies and work in the field. This, in turn, will help the lives of millions of people.
