Israel has stepped up its so-called ‘evacuation orders’ forcing people in Gaza to leave their homes, with a new order issued almost every 2 days so far during August.
New orders issued today in Deir al Balah have affected one of Islamic Relief’s staff members, who has been forced to leave the house where he has been sheltering with his wife, children and extended relatives for several months. He describes the impossible choice of deciding whether to stay or leave today:
“Right now I can see hundreds of people in the street carrying their belongings and leaving, but nobody knows what to do or where to go. My friends are saying that danger is imminent and that we need to leave now. I can’t comprehend the situation; I feel disoriented, lost, empty-headed. If we leave this house, my family will have to live on the street. How can I let my wife and children sleep on the street? But as we prepare to flee I still don’t know where to go.
“My family are desperately rushing around the house, packing our things. My sisters can’t decide what are the most important things to take – in a displaced person’s life, every item is valuable and every item helps us survive. We can’t carry everything, but how can we decide what to leave behind? The children are trying to include their favourite toys and clothes.
“My father passed away 2 years ago and in the garden is a grape vine that he planted when I was child, about 30 years ago. Every year he took care of it and watered it, and my mum used to stuff the leaves with rice and meat and cook them. I’m now standing under this vine and thinking of all the memories that will be left here. My son asked me if the Israeli army will destroy the vine once we leave? So even though the grapes are not fully ripe, I decided we should harvest them. They are ours. We are not leaving them behind.
“But thousands of people are now fleeing for their lives, including us.”
The Israeli military’s “evacuation orders”, which force civilians to move repeatedly between parts of Gaza, are putting people in even greater danger and exacerbating the spread of hunger and disease. Around 86% of Gaza’s territory has been subject to these orders since October 2023, and many people don’t know where to go as the Israeli military orders them towards areas that are completely overcrowded and dangerous.
Almost a quarter of a million people have been affected by orders during August so far, with many extremely vulnerable people such as the elderly, sick, pregnant women and malnourished children among those forced to move into ever-shrinking parts of Gaza.
Islamic Relief continues to call for an immediate ceasefire. International governments must use all leverage, including ending arms sales, to pressure the Israeli government to end its policy of forcibly displacing Palestinian civilians and blocking humanitarian aid.
