Aqiqah
Donate your Aqiqah with Islamic Relief
When a child is born, it is a sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to sacrifice livestock and divide the meat between friends and relatives, as well as to community members in need. This is called Aqiqah, and it is a virtuous act in Islam.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave an Aqiqah to his 2 beloved grandsons, Imam al-Hasan and Imam al-Husain (peace be upon them).
Aisha (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Slaughter two comparable sheep for a male newborn and one sheep for a female.” [Tirmidhi]

Muslims are also encouraged to shave the child’s head and donate the weight of their hair in silver to vulnerable families.
An Aqiqah usually takes place on the seventh day after a baby’s birth, but is sometimes performed later on.
An Aqiqah ceremony is a celebration where the meat from the sacrificed animal is cooked and shared with family, friends and members of the community who are in need.
Islamic Relief runs an Aqiqah Project to which allows people to donate Aqiqah meat directly to those most in need.
Its aim is to help vulnerable families who do not always know where their next meal is coming from, and to provide relief and lift their spirits as they face challenging circumstances.
In many countries, meat is particularly expensive and is out of reach for those in need. Therefore, many greatly value the chance to cook meat for their families.
Islamic Relief staff distribute fresh meat packs to the most vulnerable members of the community, such as widowed women, children, older people and those who have been forced to flee their homes.
Each pack contains around 5kg of meat per family.
