Sumia, a 22-year-old woman from Aden, Yemen, has faced many challenges to get to where she is now.
Growing up, Sumia was raised by 2 loving parents. Her father worked hard as a mechanic, while her mother cared for their home.
When Sumia was only 5, her father died, leaving her mother to care for Sumia and her 7 siblings on her own. Life became tough for the family, who relied on the small amount of money Sumia’s father had left behind.
In 2015, the war in Yemen intensified and living conditions became even more difficult for families like Sumia’s. The family of 9 crowded into a 1-room house, somehow Sumia still found time and space to study, beginning to learn the Qu’ran as soon as she was able to read.
Dedication and unwavering support
At the age of 10, Sumia came into contact with Islamic Relief’s Orphan Sponsorship Programme. The programme, which has been supporting orphaned children in Yemen since 2006, is a lifeline for families in need, providing a regular stipend to help with costs such as education and healthcare.
In 2023, the programme provided support to 1,375 orphaned children in Yemen.
This support, and her mother’s strength, boosted Sumia’s determination and courage to face adversity and chase her dreams that once seemed impossible. She is now a first year midwifery student who spends her evenings at the mosque leading Quranic teaching sessions.
She is a guide to others on their spiritual journey, and brings hope and encouragement to those around her to embrace compassion and empathy.
“I will never forget when I first started school – the sponsorship and my mum were like my lifelines,” Sumia recalls.
“They provided me with school supplies and helped cover my university fees, making my dream of pursuing higher education a reality. If it weren’t for their generosity, paying the $400 (approx. £320) tuition would not have been possible. Their unwavering support and kindness fuelled my success in my studies, and for that, I am forever grateful.”
“I wanted to make my husband’s dream come true by making sure all our children finished university, so they could be independent in the future,” Sumia’s mother says gently.
These words resonated deeply with Sumia, motivating her to work hard to fulfil her mother’s heartfelt wish.
Sumia’s story shows that with hard work, self belief and the right support, we can overcome enormous obstacles. Please help Islamic Relief to support more orphaned children to pursue their dreams. Donate now.
