Over 1 million people have been affected by flash flooding in East Africa. Hundreds of thousands of people in Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia have been displaced by the floods.
The floods have damaged and destroyed infrastructure, houses, livelihoods and water resources. The damage of key infrastructure in the affected regions has hindered some relief efforts.
A recent spike in seasonal rainfall in parts of East Africa has caused widespread flooding across large parts of Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia. A national emergency has been declared in Somalia as the floods have destroyed people’s homes and compelled them to leave in order to save their lives.
Approximately 695,000 people have been affected by the flash flooding in in five regions of Somalia, with 215,000 displaced from their homes. These people have had to flee their homes in order to find shelter and safety for themselves and their families. Floods have displaced more than 260,000 people and reportedly killed 100 people and injured 33 across Kenya.
The floods have wreaked havoc, based on our rapids needs assessments we have identified the following areas as priority:
- WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) – Restoration of drinking water sources and sanitation facilities.
- Food – families affected by floods urgently require food items.
- Shelter – families have lost their homes and urgent reconstruction is needed to prevent compromises to their dignity and protection.
- Non-Food Items – Household items such as bedding, clothing, kitchen items, buckets, etc. have all been washed away.
- Livelihoods – rehabilitation of those who have lost their small businesses/other means of income and sustenance.
- Health – people are in need of health services, AWD/Cholera is active in some of the affected regions.
Islamic Relief is now working with partners and relevant stakeholders to conduct and effective response. Our team in Somalia is initiating its WASH activities: water trucking and the construction of latrines. In Kenya we have been providing food assistance to affected households.
The situation in the regions affected by the floods in East Africa is dire. Some people have lost homes, some people have lost their livelihoods, some have lost their family members, and some have lost all they ever had.
With more rain on the way, Islamic Relief is assisting as much as it in the most systematic and organised way possible.
