Hamza and his family, like so many Palestinians, rely heavily on the support of humanitarian organisations to provide food, clothing and other essential needs. In parts of the Gaza Strip, the unemployment rate has reached over 50%. Worsening economic conditions and a dearth of job opportunities mean that meat is out of reach for vast numbers of people.
Across the Gaza Strip, up to two-thirds of households suffer from severe or moderate food insecurity. Sami, the family’s eldest son, has anaemia as a result of malnutrition, which is affecting his growth. He needs meat, eggs and a balanced diet, but rising food prices and the lack of employment opportunities make this impossible. “With no work or alternative source of income, it is really difficult for me to provide meat for my children.”
The lack of meat and other healthy foods is just one of many challenges facing Hamza, his wife and their 3 children. Their dilapidated home consists of 1 room, a kitchen and a bathroom. “The house needs repairing: the doors are broken, the toilet is not suitable for use, the sink is not working and we shower using a bucket.”

Islamic Relief delivers qurbani meat to Hamza and his family
Qurbani meat provides relief to families in desperate need
The worsening conditions in the Gaza Strip are reflected in the ever greater number of people in need of humanitarian assistance. “In the past, we used to get larger quantities of qurbani meat, sometimes 4 or 5 portions. Now we can only get 1 or 2 portions, because the number of people who need help has increased a lot.”
Islamic Relief is working hard to meet the growing need for humanitarian support across Palestine. In 2022, qurbani distributions will aim to reach more people than ever before.
