Last year Islamic Relief distributed qurbani meat parcels to more than 127,200 people in Gaza, providing a nutritious meal and moment of respite amid unimaginable suffering and hunger. For many, it was the first time they had been able to eat meat for months.
Maissa, a widow living in western Gaza, was one of those who received a parcel. Along with her 2 sons, Maissa cares for her niece and nephew, who are also orphans. Together, they live with Maissa’s parents.
“After my husband died, we lost our breadwinner,” Maissa told us last year, adding that the ongoing assault on Gaza by Israel has added to her family’s difficulties, with skyrocketing prices placing basic necessities beyond their reach.
“My children are always asking me for things, but I cannot get them. Their health is very bad, they are suffering from malnutrition and now jaundice because of the lack of food and clean water.
“I can’t afford to buy meat for my kids even though they tell me all the time that they want meat. The situation is very bad, I haven’t been able to buy meat for 6 months.”
With Maissa’s father in poor health and unable to work, the family relies on the generosity of others and the stipend from Islamic Relief’s Orphan Sponsorship Programme to make ends meet.
“Our situation is very bad, and we need help from anyone who can help,” Maissa says.
A parcel of joy – boiled or grilled?
Amid huge demand, Islamic Relief ensures that our seasonal food distributions reach the most vulnerable families in the communities we serve around the world. These include the families of orphaned children supported through our Orphan Sponsorship Programme, like Maissa’s.
“Eid al-Adha is a time of joy, but the war has deprived us of this and prevented us from practicing our customs and traditions.
“When I was informed that we would receive the meat, the children felt very happy and began making plans for how we might cook it – should we boil or grill it?”
More hardship this year
This year hunger has once again worsened across Gaza as Israel has resumed its intense bombing and closed all the crossings into Gaza, preventing supplies from entering.
Islamic Relief is working to get the qurbani meat to people as soon as possible.
