October 8 2023 marked the beginning of a new chapter of fear and uncertainty for the people of Lebanon.
An exchange of fire at the southern border fed into an escalation in the region that continues 3 years on, despite ceasefires coming into effect in Lebanon in November 2024 and April 2026.
Families have faced repeated bombardment. They have seen their homes destroyed, communities uprooted and lives changed forever.
Some 1.25 million people have been displaced, while more than 8,900 have lost their lives.
The bombardment has heaped pressure on Lebanon’s infrastructure – already at breaking point after enduring years of economic crisis, the Beirut port explosion and the Covid-19 pandemic.
And the too-often-celebrated resilience of the Lebanese people is being tested yet again as the ceasefire threatens to collapse.
Despite a drop in large-scale fighting, daily violations continue, with Israeli forces still carrying out strikes and expanding military activity in southern Lebanon.
The ongoing insecurity threatens humanitarian agencies’ ability to deliver aid and civilians’ opportunity to rebuild their lives.
“The people of Lebanon continue to live with the devastating humanitarian consequences of conflict, displacement and deepening needs. People need safety, dignity and stability but also immediate access to food, healthcare, clean water, shelter and livelihoods that can help families rebuild their lives,” Akram Sadeq, Islamic Relief Lebanon’s Country Director says.
“We remain committed to standing with the most vulnerable, but we cannot do this alone. We urgently call on donors and partners to increase their support and ensure that vital assistance reaches the people who need it most including the vulnerable local communities across Lebanon.”
