Islamic Relief has been delivering your zakat for the sake of Allah since 1984. Our Zakat Policy is Shariah-compliant, and ensures your zakat goes to those who need it most around the world.
Shariah compliance
At Islamic Relief, an independent Zakat Advisory Board, made up of a group of respected scholars, has ratified our Zakat Policy. These scholars are:
- Sheikh Mohammad Akram Nadwi
- Sheikh Abdullah al-Judai
- Mufti Abdul Qadir Barkatulla
Each board member provides advice to help us ensure that every penny of your zakat is spent in accordance with the Shariah (Islamic law) and as efficiently as possible.
We give to those most in need
In Islam, there are 8 categories of people who may receive zakat. Islamic Relief prioritises zakat for the poor, the needy (those who have absolutely no wealth) and travellers (internally displaced people and refugees).
We are the only Muslim charity which is a part of the UK’s Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), a coalition of UK-based charities that jointly respond to major emergencies. This makes us uniquely positioned to get your donations to those in most desperate need.
We are also certified against the Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS), a set of commitments that humanitarian organisations can use to improve the quality and effectiveness of their work.
Long-term global presence
Islamic Relief works in over 40 countries, and in many cases, our interventions stretch back decades.
For example, we have been working in the Occupied Palestinian Territory since 1997, providing a lifeline to communities struggling with the devastating effects of the Israeli occupation, blockade and recurring violence.

This long-term presence means we have the necessary experience, resources and knowledge of what communities truly need, and enables us to spend your zakat efficiently in both emergency situations and through long-term development programmes.
Help break the poverty cycle
Islamic Relief uses zakat to fund projects that support social security networks and provide recipients with the means to lift themselves out of poverty with dignity.
Together, we’ve supported vulnerable communities with clean water, shelter and sustainable incomes, ensuring your zakat has a lasting impact on those who need it most.
Maximised impact
At Islamic Relief, a minimum of 87.5% of zakat funds are received by eligible zakat recipients.
The remaining 12.5% is used to administer the zakat projects, for example, staff salaries and travel for implementation, etc.
We ensure zakat administration costs are kept to a minimum, for example through covering support costs of projects through non-zakat funding.
Transparency is central to Islamic Relief’s values, and so we are open about the fact that it costs money to deliver aid and to do it well. We want to ensure people in need receive the best possible support.
