Twelve-year-old Tahseen has experienced neurological challenges since infancy. With the support of his mother and a specialised speech therapy centre, he has been making progress, but the current escalation in Gaza has heaped new challenges on the family.
Until recently Tahseen attended therapy sessions every 3 months. Despite the financial burden, his mother prioritised his wellbeing and was pleased with the progress her son was making.
In October 2023, plans were under way for Tahseen to travel to Egypt to receive even more specialised treatment. The escalation shattered not only these plans, but also the treatment regimen Tahseen had diligently stuck to and benefitted from.
His condition has regressed, requiring more intensive and costly interventions. These would be difficult for the family to afford, but even reaching the treatment centre safely has been impossible amid bombing and chronic fuel shortages.
His mother says Tahseen has been struggling with sleep, eating less, and feeling increasingly agitated. Like tens of thousands of others in Gaza, Tahseen has been injured since the escalation began, suffering a head injury that has further exacerbated his condition.
Struggling to survive
It was in these grave circumstances that the family was forced to flee their home in December. Living in makeshift accommodation, they have struggled to survive amid increasing shortages of food, water and other basic items.
Tahseen’s mother is a resilient and resourceful woman who remains determined to secure the best possible care for her son. The money she receives from Islamic Relief’s Orphan Sponsorship Programme once went towards Tahseen’s medical costs, but now helps the family to afford food, water and diapers. The support that was once focussed on improving Tahseen’s health and hopes for the future, has become a lifeline for the boy and his siblings.
Since the escalation in Gaza began in October, Islamic Relief has constantly monitored and adapted the support we can offer those in need, thinking always of the safety of our staff and the communities we serve.
Despite the extreme challenges, one area where we have been able to expand our support is through our Orphan Sponsorship Programme, which is now helping more than 11,700 children and their families living in Gaza.
The sponsorship provides a regular financial stipend originally intended to cover costs associated with education and healthcare. As with Tahseen’s family, many are now using this vital income to pay the skyrocketing costs of basic food items and other essentials.
More than 34,500 people have lost their lives in Gaza since the crisis began and, with no ceasefire in sight, that number continues to rise. Famine looms over families struggling to find enough food to eat or the gas needed to cook it, and for the more than 1 million in Rafah fearing ground invasion, every moment is filled with agonising uncertainty. In a time of desperate need, after more than 6 months of attacks and blockade, this money is helping Palestinian families struggling to survive.
