Israel’s assault on Gaza has orphaned thousands of Palestinian children since October 2023. Our Orphan Sponsorship Programme is a lifeline for many of these vulnerable children, including Salam, who was born during the current crisis.
Salam’s late father was an orphan himself. As a child, he was enrolled on the same Orphan Sponsorship Programme, which is now a lifeline to Salam.
Salam’s mother had to give birth under terrifying conditions: “The hospitals were in a difficult condition. I needed food, medication, formula, nappies – and they weren’t available.”
Adding to their hardship, the small family have been displaced numerous times since October 2023.
“We didn’t know where to go. We moved to places where the environment was really bad. I used to struggle to find clean water for Salam. As much as I tried to keep it clean there was no use,” Umm Salam says.
The poor conditions and lack of hygiene led to Salam falling ill several times.

Israel’s almost total closure of the border has meant food and other essentials have been incredibly scarce. While the dangers and hardships of living in Gaza have made it nearly impossible for families to earn a stable income.
“The financial situation was very hard. There were times where I couldn’t find her formula or nappies. Many times, I didn’t have any food to give her,” Umm Salam says.
A home without walls
Salam and her mother are currently staying with their family, with 12 people crammed into a single room.
The situation is precarious, especially for a toddler, as bombing has left the room without walls.

Islamic Relief’s support has provided Salam with some ease through a regular stipend, as well as support with essentials such as shelter, food and clothing.
“With the sponsorship she gets from Islamic Relief, I can plan and hope for the best for my daughter,” Umm Salam says.
Islamic Relief is providing a lifeline for more than 21,000 orphaned children in Gaza, but there are still over 7,300 children in our system waiting to be matched with a sponsor.
