The International Court of Justice’s new ruling on the climate crisis is a major milestone towards holding governments accountable and ensuring climate justice, Islamic Relief Worldwide says.
Waseem Ahmad, Chief Executive of Islamic Relief Worldwide, welcomed the ruling and said:
“This ruling is a landmark victory for humanity and the planet. It confirms that all states have a legal obligation to act decisively and tackle the climate catastrophe. States that pollute our planet and fuel this crisis, or fail to stop it, must be held accountable and pay up for the damage they cause.
“In Islamic Relief’s work around the world we see how the climate crisis is destroying the lives, livelihoods and hopes of the poorest and most marginalised communities. Now the world’s highest court has heard their voices and has acted to protect their futures. The ruling is a massive step towards ending the impunity of polluters and rich nations, and achieving real climate justice.
“Now governments must heed the ruling and take action. They must cut emissions, phase out fossil fuels, and fund investment in renewable energy. They must help communities adapt to climate change and pay compensation for the loss and damage they have caused.”
The ruling by the ICJ — the United Nations’ principal judicial body, known as the World Court — confirms that it may constitute an “internationally wrongful act” if states fail to “take appropriate action to protect the climate system from greenhouse gas emissions — including through fossil fuel production, fossil fuel consumption, the granting of fossil fuel exploration licences or the provision of fossil fuel subsidies”. Failure to do so requires states to make restitution and compensation to those affected.
