Israel’s plan to militarise the provision of humanitarian aid in Gaza is the latest step in its use of starvation as a weapon of war and will put many more civilian lives at risk, Islamic Relief says as the Palestinian Authority today declares a state of famine.
Children are now starving to death as Israel has shut off all food, medicine and other supplies into Gaza for more than 2 months. Now Israel plans to shut down the existing aid distribution system and only allow distribution to pre-approved individuals in a few heavily militarised and restricted sites in southern Gaza, patrolled by armed personnel.
This will deny lifesaving aid to many extremely vulnerable people who are already struggling to survive, in a grave violation of human rights. It will give Israel total control over who provides and receives aid, at a time when the Israeli government has repeatedly stated its aim is to starve people and force Palestinians out of Gaza.
Humanitarian aid must be provided impartially, independently and neutrally to people who need it. This plan violates these core humanitarian principles and will entrench the use of aid as a political and military tool of ethnic cleansing.
International governments must stand with humanitarian organisations and strongly reject the plan. They must insist Israel allows full humanitarian access to people in need, in accordance with humanitarian principles and obligations under international law.
