Iftikhar Shaheen has been named as the Chief Executive Officer of Islamic Relief Worldwide, a humanitarian and development agency headquartered in Birmingham, UK.
Taking the helm immediately, Iftikhar Shaheen brings over 20 years of distinguished experience as a humanitarian and international development practitioner, having led programmes across Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.
The appointment comes at a pivotal moment for the humanitarian sector, as organisations face unprecedented challenges including climate emergencies, protracted conflicts, and shrinking civic space. Most recently serving as Country Director for DT Global in Somalia, Iftikhar Shaheen held fiduciary responsibility for major governance and resilience programmes, including the USAID-funded Transition Initiative for Stabilisation Saddex (TIS3) and the FCDO-funded Inclusive Resilience in Somalia (IRIS). Prior to this, he served as Strategic Stabilisation Adviser with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), providing guidance to the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative and international donors on recovery coordination and governance priorities during a critical phase in Somalia’s state-building process.
Iftikhar Shaheen’s extensive career includes leadership roles with Winrock International, Plan International, VSO International, Norwegian Refugee Council, and Merlin (now part of Save the Children). He has managed complex, high-value portfolios across Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Pakistan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Papua New Guinea, specialising in governance, stabilisation, conflict sensitivity, and humanitarian response.
In 2009, Iftikhar Shaheen served with Islamic Relief as Country Director for Somalia and as the organisation’s inaugural Regional Director for East and Horn of Africa. His return represents a homecoming to an organisation whose values and mission he knows intimately, having helped shape its regional strategy and delivered large-scale humanitarian programmes integrating WASH, health, and education across multiple countries.
Commenting on his appointment, Iftikhar Shaheen said:
“It is a privilege to take on this role at a moment when collaboration across the humanitarian and development sector has never been more vital. I am looking to work closely with colleagues not only at Islamic Relief but with fellow humanitarian workers across the landscape to face the turbulence we collectively face head-on. Islamic Relief’s forty years of community trust, our unique reach, and our faith-based identity give us much to contribute to collective efforts.”
Haroun Atallah, Chair of Trustees, said:
“We are confident that Iftikhar’s wealth of experience, values-driven leadership, and commitment to humanitarian excellence will strengthen our ability to serve the world’s most vulnerable communities.”
Iftikhar Shaheen succeeds Waseem Ahmad, who completed his term in September 2025. Nadeem Malik, who served as Interim CEO, will be returning to his role as Managing Director of Islamic Relief’s Humanitarian Academy for Development.
