Islamic Relief is working closely with partners to distribute food packs and cash assistance to those who have been affected by the armed conflict in central Mali.
Thousands fled Douentza Circle and Ber commune in February 2024 as a wave of violence spread across the Mopti and Timbuktu regions.
A desperate situation
Zaina and her 6 children were forced to flee on foot to Serere, 30km away, after armed men stormed their village.
“We lost everything, our house, our cooking pots and even our clothes. We left everything in a hurry,” the 42-year-old says.
“I had sheep and goats that I didn’t have time to gather, now I’m sure they’re lost.”
“For the time being, we’re here, waiting for the situation to go back to normal so we can return to our homes. I hope my house will still be there when I return.”
Zaina and her children are currently staying in a tent made from old blankets and clothes, and they are forced to rely on the kindness of neighbours, who sometimes provide the family with food when they can.
However, it is not enough to sustain them.
“My children have to go to the market on fair days to help the traders to get a bit of money or food. Often, they have to beg because we don’t have enough to eat. I have to stay here under the tent with my youngest children waiting for them.”
Islamic Relief provided Zaina and her family with a month’s supply of food, including rice, cooking oil, salt and milk powder. Zaina also received a donation of blankets and materials enabling her to construct a stronger and warmer shelter.
Delivering valuable aid
So far, Islamic Relief has reached almost 3,200 families in Bambara Maoude and Serere, delivering food packages and materials that can be used to construct temporary shelters.
Staff have also distributed vouchers that can be exchanged for food or shelter materials at mobile shops set up by Islamic Relief that are moving between internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in the region.
More help is needed however, as more than 1,600 people in Bambara Maoude and Serere remain displaced, not knowing where their next meal is coming from.
