Islamic Relief is preparing to support families displaced by violence in central Mali.
Approximately 2,000 people have fled Douentza Cercle to nearby Bambara Maoude.
Displaced families are in urgent need of food, shelter and blankets. Many left home without food and have no way to make a living in their new location. They are using old clothes to build makeshift shelters to protect themselves from the intense daytime heat and plunging night-time temperatures.
The families are gathered near to a source of surface water, prompting concerns of exposure to waterborne disease.
Islamic Relief’s response
Islamic Relief already has a presence in Bambara Maoude, where we run ongoing long-term development programmes. Thanks to this, our staff were able to quickly reach the newly displaced people and assess their needs.
We have been liaising with partner organisations, such as the World Food Programme (WFP), to coordinate a response, including initially providing food, shelter and blankets.
Islamic Relief has been working in Mali since 1997, providing life-saving humanitarian aid in times of crisis and launching life-changing programmes that help communities flourish.
