20 February 2025: Humanitarian agency Islamic Relief was today hosted by HRH The King and Queen at Buckingham Palace for a reception celebrating the impact of humanitarian work around the world. Islamic Relief was invited alongside other global charities including Christian Aid, International Health Partners and ShelterBox.
The event coincided with a major anniversary for each of the above charities, with Islamic Relief marking its 40th year of saving lives. At the reception, Islamic Relief exhibited some of its incredible women’s empowerment work from across the globe, highlighting projects it supports in Somalia, Jordan and Indonesia. These projects enable women’s groups to produce and sell beautiful products such as textiles, cream, soap, lampshades and more, in order to support themselves and their families.
The event spotlighted the stories of some of the remarkable and resilient women who are part of these projects, including Hanan in Jordan who was forced to flee domestic violence, and Hawa in Somalia whose husband’s death left her as the sole breadwinner for her four children.
Supporting the rights of women and girls is a key part of Islamic Relief’s international and domestic work, through programmes supporting women’s economic empowerment, combatting gender-based violence including FGM and domestic abuse, and preventing early and forced marriages. The organisation works with local Muslim faith leaders to keep girls in school and change attitudes to gender roles and supports female campaigners advocating for lasting change in their communities. During emergencies, Islamic Relief’s humanitarian responses often focus on supporting women with initiatives such as cash grants and loans, livelihood programmes, dignity kits, and psychosocial support.
In warzones such as Sudan, Islamic Relief has set up innovative ‘coffee corners’ where survivors of rape can find safe spaces, peer support and counselling.
Waseem Ahmad, CEO of Islamic Relief Worldwide, comments, “It was such an honour to be recognised by Their Majesties The King and Queen for our lifesaving and life-changing international work. Their Majesties’ long-standing support for Islamic Relief and their dedication to humanitarian work serves as an inspiration for the whole sector. Islamic Relief marking its 40th anniversary is a testament to the generosity of our supporters and the communities we serve around the world, and we are more determined than ever to keep tackling poverty and suffering over the next 40 years. Women’s rights are at the heart of our work, and it was a proud moment to be able to showcase the inspirational efforts of women from Somalia, Indonesia and Jordan at Buckingham Palace. Together we can build a fairer and better future for everyone.”
