Since June, severe monsoon floods have killed over 600 hundred people in northern Pakistan.
Heavy monsoon rains have caused devastating flash floods and landslides in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Gilgit-Baltistan provinces, causing extensive loss of life and property.
In KP’s Buner district alone, over 200 people have died in just 48 hours. Homes, crops and infrastructure have been destroyed, and entire villages are in mourning.
The full scale of loss is still emerging, with many still missing, and there are fears of further flooding and landslides in the coming days.
Islamic Relief’s emergency response team is currently in Pakistan providing food and water, aiming to deliver aid to 100,000 affected individuals.
Delivering life-saving aid
Islamic Relief has distributed cooked meals to 590 families and provided safe drinking water to 700 families in Buner district. In Swat district, KP, we have delivered water and food packs, including canned food and other essentials, to 420 families.
Our teams are also supporting government-led rescue and relief efforts.
Naheed Shah, Islamic Relief’s area manager in KP province says:
“Buner is the worst affected [district], with 4 villages completely destroyed and over 200 casualties reported in the last 24 hours. The situation remains critical with many families facing unimaginable loss.
“In 1 village we met an elderly man – 3 of his family members had died and another 4 were still missing. Nearby, we witnessed women searching for their loved ones. Local shopkeepers have lost everything, including their only source of income as the flood waters washed away their shops.
“We have initiated emergency response efforts, and the affected communities urgently need support.”
