Islamic Relief’s partner, Concerned Muslims of Trinidad and Tobago (CMTT) and our team are preparing food packs for survivors of Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica.
Hurricane Melissa made landfall on Tuesday 28 October as a category five hurricane – the strongest storm to hit the island nation in modern history.
Category five hurricanes are the strongest on the scale used to measure such storms, and mean that wind speeds have reached 157mph or higher.
Roads impassable
At least 28 people have been killed in the disaster, Jamaican authorities said on Saturday in an announcement that almost doubled the prior death toll.
The number is expected to continue to rise as parts of the country are still largely inaccessible due to debris blocking roads.
Homes have been completely destroyed along coastal areas, but the full extent of the damage is not yet clear. On Friday 31 October, some 400,000 people were still without power, the BBC reported.
Working through partners to respond
Islamic Relief has deployed a team to the region and is working through CMTT in the Caribbean to assist people whose lives have been devastated by the disaster. We will distribute food parcels as part of the initial response.
