Palestinians in Gaza now face a deadly choice of being killed by starvation or shot while trying to get food, Islamic Relief says.
Hundreds of people have been killed while seeking aid since the Israeli-backed GHF system set up militarised distribution sites three weeks ago. Thousands more people have been wounded by almost daily attacks on civilians at or near these sites.
Islamic Relief is appalled that desperate civilians who are being systematically starved by Israel’s blockade are now lured with promises of food and then gunned down.
We are heartbroken to confirm that the brother of one of our aid workers was killed while trying to get flour for his family – including his wife and 2-month-old baby daughter – during yesterday’s deadly massacre near a distribution site in Khan Younis.
While our staff member worked to deliver lifesaving humanitarian aid, his brother and younger nephews set off early in the morning to try and collect food. Witnesses describe Israeli soldiers, tanks and drones opening fire on civilians as large crowds gathered near trucks loaded with sacks of flour.
In the chaos the relatives were separated as they tried to find somewhere to hide from the attack. Our aid worker spent hours unable to contact his relatives, not knowing if they had survived or were also killed alongside his brother.
Yesterday’s attack on aid seekers in Khan Younis was the deadliest yet – with reports of over 50 people killed and over 200 wounded – but such attacks are now occurring almost daily. There must be independent international investigations into these attacks.
As violence escalates across the Middle East, international governments must not allow the suffering in Gaza to fade from attention. Gaza remains by far the deadliest place in the region, with attacks escalating and hundreds of Palestinians killed in recent days.
Under international law, people have the right to receive humanitarian assistance, yet Israel continues to prevent almost all independent aid from reaching Palestinians. Very little food is reaching people and dozens of young children and elderly people have starved to death. Hospitals have run out of lifesaving medicine and fuel. Vital items such as tents for displaced families and water purification equipment are banned.
The militarised GHF system is not about stopping famine and getting aid to people; it’s about weaponising humanitarian aid and entrenching Israeli control. It is an inhumane and dehumanising system that violates the core humanitarian principles of humanity, independence, neutrality and impartiality. It is putting many more lives at risk.
The only way to safely get aid to people who need it is for international governments to urgently put meaningful pressure on Israel to fully end its siege, reopen all crossings and allow large-scale, safe and unimpeded humanitarian access.
