Islamic Relief has begun distributing food parcels and essential medical supplies in the Occupied Palestinian Territory amid an ongoing escalation.
Working through our local partners, we have so far supplied around 1,000 fresh food parcels to vulnerable families in the southern governate of Khan-Younis. The parcels include essentials such as vegetables, fruit, eggs and chicken, and are designed feed a family of 5 for around 1 week.
We have also provided essential medical supplies to Gaza’s hospitals to support their response to this emergency.
Islamic Relief is continually monitoring the situation on the ground to respond to urgent humanitarian needs.
Closed borders risk shortages
In Gaza, 31 people have been killed and 93 injured since the escalation began earlier this week, according to media reports. Women and children are among the dead. In Israel, local media reports that 1 person has been killed and 8 others wounded.
Palestinian officials said 6 houses have been completely destroyed, and around 30 partially damaged, leaving some families without a home. At least 1 building in Israel has also sustained damage.

Items are weighed as Islamic Relief and local partners put together fresh food parcels
The ongoing escalation comes amid some of the deadliest attacks on civilians in the Occupied Palestinian Territory for many years. Exchanges of fire have been reported today (12 May) as the escalation enters its fourth day.
Schools, universities and banks in Gaza have been closed since the escalation began, while many other services are operating at reduced levels. While Gaza’s border with Egypt remains open, Israeli authorities have closed points of entry into Gaza, obstructing the flow of much-needed medical supplies, fuel and other essential goods into the enclave.
Gaza’s electricity supplier has warned that the situation could lead to a substantial shortage in power supply if fuel cannot reach Gaza’s only power plant. Such shortages can be life-threatening as hospitals are affected, along with water and sanitation services.
The border closures also prevent patients from seeking medical treatment outside of Gaza, with cancer patients being particularly affected.
Islamic Relief in the Occupied Palestinian Territory
Islamic Relief condemns all violence against civilians and calls for an end to the decades-long Israeli blockade of Gaza. Cutting the region off from the rest of the world, the blockade has fuelled high levels of poverty and unemployment, and has crippled essential services such as healthcare, electricity and water.
In Gaza, a staggering 1.3 million people are in need of humanitarian aid, with many unable to adequately feed themselves or their children.
Islamic Relief has been working in the Occupied Palestinian Territory since 1997, providing families with essentials such as food, cash, shelter and clean water. From our office in Gaza we also support schools and hospitals to help young people build livelihoods, and assist vulnerable children and widowed mothers.
“We know from previous escalations that when bombing increases, it is overwhelmingly civilians who are killed, injured and forced to flee their homes,” said Muneeb Abu-Ghazaleh, Islamic Relief Country Director in Gaza, speaking earlier this week.
“It’s vital that the international community applies pressure to stop the crisis escalating further. Israeli authorities must ensure that civilians and civilian infrastructure are protected from attack in accordance with international humanitarian law.
