On 10 October 2025, the first phase of a new ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas came into effect. For more than 2 years, Palestinians have suffered a relentless and brutal onslaught by Israel. Around 68,000 people have been killed, including more than 20,000 children.
While the news of a ceasefire is a positive, if long overdue, step offering hope for the future, for Palestinians in Gaza it is not an end to the nightmare.
Grieving, exhausted, and hungry, they have been shattered by relentless atrocities and what a UN panel determined amounts to genocide. Now, the ceasefire offers some respite from the horror of bombardment, but Israel continues to prevent sufficient humanitarian aid from reaching desperate families in Gaza.
The scale of need is staggering, the statistics horrifying:
- Over 640,000 people face catastrophic starvation and another 1.1 million are facing emergency levels of hunger
- 92% of homes have been damaged or destroyed
- 50% of the population receive less than the emergency standard of 6 litres of drinking water per day
- 92% of schools have been damaged or destroyed
- Gaza is blanketed in 50 million tonnes of rubble.
The most urgent need right now is to get more aid into Gaza
The ceasefire alone does not stop the famine. Food and medicine must be allowed to enter Gaza in sufficient quantities to end the suffering. Under the ceasefire agreement more aid should be allowed in – so far we have seen a small increase, but still nowhere near enough to meet the huge needs.
Throughout Israel’s horrific assault of Gaza, Islamic Relief have been a lifeline for struggling families. We have provided medical care to thousands of pregnant women and delivered more than 71 million hot meals to displaced people. Through our Orphan Sponsorship Programme, we are supporting nearly 22,000 children, and their families.
Thanks to our incredible supporters, Islamic Relief have remained by the side of Palestinians in Gaza for nearly 30 years. With your support, we continue working around the clock to save lives and ease the suffering in Gaza. Our teams and partners are working tirelessly on the ground right now, reaching families in dire need with food, water, and cash so they can buy essentials such as medicine and soap.
Islamic Relief is ready to massively scale up our current lifesaving aid and help reconstruction efforts as soon as restrictions on humanitarian access are lifted. We also stand ready to support the Palestinian people to rebuild their shattered lives and communities, as soon as conditions allow.
We pray for the ceasefire to hold, for Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine to end, and for lasting peace.
