For more than 2 years, the people of Gaza have endured abject horror. Tens of thousands of people have been killed, while survivors repeatedly fled in a desperate search for safety.
Famine has been declared in Gaza City as people starved to death throughout the enclave. Whole neighbourhoods are reduced to rubble, with schools, hospitals and homes razed to the ground by Israeli bombardment.
The long-awaited ceasefire, announced in October, offers fragile hope but many adults and children are left with life-changing injuries and trauma, and desperately need more aid.
Throughout the Israeli bombardment, Islamic Relief has remained active in Gaza, standing side by side with the Palestinian people. Now, as Palestinians in Gaza consider the prospect of rebuilding their shattered lives and communities, their fight for survival continues.
Among their challenges is to live through the winter months. Most people are living in tents or makeshift shelters and are increasingly vulnerable to outbreaks of disease and the impact of heavy rain, strong winds and cold temperatures.
Wisam is a father of 4 and husband to Nariman. Before the bombardment, he had a steady income but now finds himself unemployed and entirely reliant on humanitarian aid. The couple’s family home was destroyed so now the family lives in temporary accommodation. Both Wisam and Nariman require medical attention, but access to treatment is severely limited in besieged Gaza.
The prospect of winter fuels their anxiety. Nariman has cancer, making her more vulnerable to illness and the cold.
“For me, winter represents a time of constant challenge and fear. It means having to make tough choices between basic needs—whether to prioritise warmth, food, or healthcare,” explains Wisam.
“It’s a time when every decision feels critical, and I often feel helpless as I watch my wife and children suffer from the cold. It also reminds me of the harsh reality we live in as a displaced family, with no stability or security.”
Despite enormous challenges, Islamic Relief’s Winterisation Programme reached over 11,200 people in Gaza last winter, providing:
- tarps
- blankets
- warm clothing
- cash vouchers.
“The winter clothing and blankets provided us with essential protection against the cold, particularly since we lack the warm clothing needed for the family,” adds Wisam.
“The tarps and tents distributed served as temporary shelter, protecting us from the winds and rain. While these solutions are not permanent, they provided much-needed protection from the severe weather that is difficult to endure in temporary shelters.
“The distribution of these items has also strengthened the sense of solidarity within the community, as everyone comes together to help one another in times of need,” Wisam says.
“This aid not only offers physical security but also provides a sense of comfort and hope during challenging times.”
This year Islamic Relief aims to reach even more people in Gaza in desperate need. Please help us give warmth and save lives. Donate to our Winter Appeal now.
