Kenya is a country heavily impacted by the climate crisis. Climate shocks over the past few years include severe droughts, heavy rains and devastating flooding – all combining to force thousands of people from their homes and leaving them facing financial difficulties.
According to the United Nations, around 38.6% of people live below the poverty line in Kenya.
Dahabo, 55, lives in one of Nairobi’s oldest neighbourhoods and does her best to support her family of 5.
“The challenges are too many. I don’t even know where to begin. Providing for my family hasn’t been easy at all because I have no means,” Dahabo tells Islamic Relief.
“I don’t have a job or any source of income. We survive only through the help of kind neighbours and well-wishers. Sometimes, we go to bed hungry.”
Dahabo is unemployed and struggles to scrape together enough money to buy food. The family are almost entirely reliant on humanitarian support.
“A lack of food has become a part of our daily life. We’ve learned to live with it, even though it’s never easy.
“Most days, we just eat whatever we can find, and when there’s nothing, we simply go without. Of course it affects us, but this struggle has become our new normal.”
Helping families at an important time of year
Last year, Islamic Relief’s Ramadan food distribution reached more than 22,000 families across Kenya. Families like Dahabo’s received essential items including rice, sugar and cooking oil, as well as dates to break their fast.
“Ramadan is a sacred time for us. It’s a month of prayer, reflection, and hope but it’s also one of the hardest when we have nothing,” Dahabo shares.
“That’s why this support means so much. It reminds us that Allah never forgets His people, even in the most difficult times.”
For families like Dahabo’s, Ramadan packs can help ease pressure at an important time of year.
“The Ramadan food pack helped us more than words can express. We had nothing in the house, and honestly, we didn’t know how we would make it through the month.”
When the food arrived, it lifted a heavy burden off my shoulders. For a while, I won’t have to worry about how to feed my family. We are truly grateful. May Allah reward everyone who made this support possible.”
