Every year, World Humanitarian Day brings to the forefront the extraordinary stories of those who dedicate their lives to helping others. This year, under the theme #ActForHumanity, we celebrate the work of our humanitarian heroes by sharing their inspiring stories and memories.
Today, we highlight the journey of Majdi Samaan, our remarkable multi-country content and media manager.
A journey rooted in resilience
“I grew up hearing tales of injustice and unspoken suffering,” says Majdi, who became familiar with displacement from an early age. His family sought refuge in Gaza after becoming displaced from another part of the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
The scattering of family and friends created a sense of challenge and a drive in Majdi to share stories of resilience and survival.
“Our collective experiences have significantly shaped my worldview. I wanted to be the voice for the oppressed, not just in Palestine but in places like Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Myanmar, Afghanistan, and Iraq.”
A defining moment
The pivotal moment for Majdi came during his time living and working in a refugee camp in Gaza. Witnessing the harsh realities faced by displaced families, especially children, left a permanent mark on him.
Then came the day he captured a powerful moment – a child smiling. This image of resilience amid adversity solidified his determination to dedicate his life to humanitarian work.
“Living under siege, experiencing bombardments, and enduring starvation have left a mark on my soul. It made me more aware of others’ suffering, realising that pain, hunger, and fear are real and not abstract concepts.”

Capturing humanity through his lens
As a photographer and videographer, Majdi believes in the power of visual storytelling to connect with people on an emotional level.
“Through my lens, I strive to capture genuine moments and true emotions. These images and footage convey stories and experiences in a way that touches both hearts and minds”.
One of the most impactful projects he worked on was an interview with a Syrian father who needed heart surgery. The video shared with supporters touched hearts and led to the establishment of a cardiology unit which has saved thousands of lives.
“This project embodies the essence of our humanitarian work: providing assistance to those in dire need and saving lives.”
Aspiring for a better future
Looking ahead, Majdi, now living in Türkiye with his family, aspires to become an even more effective advocate for vulnerable people.
“I want to use my experience to reach places still oppressed and lacking global coverage. My goal is to convey their messages clearly and transparently to wealthy countries and individuals who are in a position to help.”
Balancing the emotional and physical demands of his role, especially at present, with many family members still in Gaza, is a constant challenge.
“Every call or message from them brings intense anxiety. Despite these challenges, they remain resilient, living without electricity, clean water, or sufficient food.”
Despite the stress, Majdi remains committed to his work. Reflecting on his role, he says, “Working with Islamic Relief has profoundly changed my perspective on the world and humanity. Witnessing the hardships people endure in conflict and poverty-stricken areas has taught me to be more empathetic and committed to humanitarian issues.”

Acting for humanity
For Majdi, #ActforHumanity is a call to embody compassion and empathy, providing support and creating positive change, even at a high cost.
“Our commitment to humanity requires us to be active in providing support and rejecting neutrality in the face of human needs.”
His advice to others is to start with small, realistic steps and look for areas where they can help based on their skills and available resources.
“Focusing on hope and positivity helps overcome obstacles and continue providing support, even in the toughest times.”
This World Humanitarian Day, we celebrate the dedication and resilience of our humanitarian heroes including Majdi. Their stories remind us of the importance of acting for humanity, embodying compassion, and making a positive impact in the lives of those facing the greatest hardships. As Majdi continues his journey, his unwavering commitment and inspiring work serve as a beacon of hope and a call to action for us all.
