Israel’s assault on Gaza has orphaned tens of thousands of Palestinian children since October 2023. Our Orphan Sponsorship Programme is a lifeline for many of these grieving children, who are struggling to survive.
Many children have lost one or both parents, leaving them facing danger, hunger and uncertainty, without the support of their parents. It is estimated that more than 39,000 children in Gaza have been orphaned since the onslaught began.
Islamic Relief has launched a new campaign to secure sponsorship for the more than 7,300 children on our waitlist. The campaign allows donors to support orphaned children in Gaza through 3 methods:
- one-to-one sponsorship
- multiple child sponsorship
- a general fund
Here, we explain more about how the Gaza General Orphans Fund works.
How is Islamic Relief supporting orphans in Gaza?
Islamic Relief has been supporting orphaned children in Gaza since 1999 through our Orphan Sponsorship Programme, which has massively expanded since the crisis began to meet the desperate needs on the ground.
Before October 2023, we were sponsoring 7,200 children in need in Gaza – that number has now risen to more than 21,000.
What is the Gaza General Orphans Fund?
Unlike our other sponsorship options, the Gaza General Orphans Fund is not a direct, one-to-one sponsorship.
Instead, your donations go towards providing critical care and support to orphaned children enrolled on our Orphan Sponsorship Programme.
Examples of how funds have been used in the past include covering healthcare costs that exceeded the monthly stipend provided by the Orphan Sponsorship Programme and supporting an orphan whose sponsor has been unable to continue giving.
How does the Gaza General Orphans Fund work?
Donations to the Gaza General Orphans Fund are pooled together to support orphans in need of extra care, assist their guardians, and provide financial support to those in greatest need.
We use electronic cash transfers to put money directly into the accounts of families, making funds available to allow them to circumvent the cash crisis.
Through the payment system, families are notified that payments have been made to their e-wallets, which they are able to use to withdraw money from functioning supermarkets
The system allows Islamic Relief to see which families have redeemed their codes, and has become a helpful tool in checking in on the welfare of families enrolled in the programme.
How many orphans in Gaza need sponsors?
More than 7,300 orphaned children are in our system, waiting to be matched with sponsors.
Our staff are working tirelessly to identify and register children in need of sponsorship. Unfortunately, many of these children in need are from the same families.
With your continued support, Islamic Relief will be a lifeline for orphaned children in Gaza.
The situation may feel hopeless, but, with your help, Islamic Relief we can reach more families in desperate need.
