Mostafa, 12, loved studying maths. Now, his calculations are all about survival, as he risks his life every day to collect water for his family.
Mostafa lost his father 11 years ago, and since then has been raised by his mother in the most difficult place on earth to be a child – Gaza.
Along with his 4 siblings, Mostafa spends his days fetching water, cooking, collecting firewood, or, when he can, retrieving food from a local charity kitchen. Every child plays a role in ensuring the family survives.
Orphans face a daily struggle to survive
In the past 2 years, Mostafa’s family have been forcibly displaced 5 times. The first instance saw their family home destroyed by Israeli missiles, forcing them to flee without any belongings.
They slept on the bare ground until they were eventually able to build a makeshift tent with whatever they could find. The tent is worn and fragile, offering no protection from the cold and rain of winter, or the scorching heat of summer.

They suffer from rodents and insect infestations, as they struggle each day to secure enough food and water for the family.
“I have no flour at all, not even firewood to cook for my children,” says Amna, Mostafa’s mother.
“I’ve stopped sleeping at night from constant worry. I’m the mother and the father. I have to manage everything myself.”
The family has been displaced to a remote region where Mostafa and his siblings have no internet access and are unable to continue their education.
Every day is the same – a recurring struggle to survive.
A lifeline to children in Gaza
The family’s situation is an all too familiar one, as thousands of orphans and displaced families in Gaza struggle through similar circumstances. The dire living conditions and lack of essential resources threaten their lives and futures.
Mostafa and his family depend on humanitarian aid, which is still falling catastrophically short across Gaza, as Israel’s illegal siege means severe shortages of food and other essentials.
How many children have died in Gaza?
Heartbreakingly, more than 20,100 children are thought to have been killed in Gaza since October 2023 and tens of thousands orphaned. These children now struggle to survive without the love and care of 1 or both of their parents.
