Gaza is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a child.
Many children have lost 1 or both parents since October 2023, leaving them facing danger, hunger and uncertainty, without the support of their mum and dad. It is estimated that more than 39,000 children in Gaza have been orphaned since the onslaught began.
Rarely, if ever, have so many children been orphaned in such a short period of time.
Islamic Relief has launched a new campaign to secure sponsorship for the more than 7,000 children on our waitlist. The campaign allows donors to support orphaned children in Gaza through 3 methods:
- one-to-one sponsorship
- multiple child sponsorship
- a general fund
Here, we explain more about how one-to-one sponsorship works.
How is Islamic Relief supporting orphans in Gaza?
Islamic Relief has been supporting orphaned children in Gaza since 1999 through our Orphan Sponsorship Programme which massively expanded since the current crisis began to meet the desperate needs on the ground.
Before October 2023, we were sponsoring 7,200 children in need in Gaza – that number has now risen to more than 21,000.
How does one-to-one sponsorship work?
Through our Orphan Sponsorship Programme, donors are matched with orphaned children in need of support, who then receive the donation in the form of a monthly stipend.
We use electronic cash transfers to put money directly into the accounts of families, making funds available to allow them to circumvent the cash crisis. Prior to the current crisis, the stipends were limited to covering health and education expenses, but we now give the money on an unconditional basis, meaning families can use it to buy what they most need when it is available.
Through the payment system, families are notified that payments have been made to their e-Wallets, which they are able to use to withdraw money from functioning supermarkets
The system allows Islamic Relief to see which families have redeemed their codes, and has become a helpful tool in checking in on the welfare of families enrolled in the programme.
Donors will receive updates on the child they’ve sponsored. It is our aim to provide annual updates, but the situation on the ground has meant that there can be delays in gathering this information and sharing it with donors.
How many orphans in Gaza need sponsors?
More than 7,300 orphaned children are in our system, waiting to be matched with sponsors.
Our staff are working tirelessly to identify and register children in need of sponsorship.
Without a ceasefire and an end to Israel’s blockade however, the number of orphans in Gaza will continue to rise.
Islamic Relief has been working tirelessly to upscale our Orphan Sponsorship Programme to reach as many children as we possibly can. With your donations, we can reach even more orphans and their families with much needed support.
What is life like for children in Gaza right now?
Since October 2023, more than 19,000 children have been killed and tens of thousands more have been wounded – many of whom have been left with life-changing injuries.
Every day, children and their families in Gaza face starvation, water scarcity and displacement. An entire generation is living through trauma that most people can barely imagine.
The impact on children’s long term physical and mental health is devastating and, in some cases, irreversible.
Amid so much suffering, will my donation make a difference?
In a word, yes.
Orphan sponsorship is one of the few reliable and sustainable ways donors can help orphans and their families suffering in Gaza.
The prices of basic goods have skyrocketed and livelihoods have been destroyed, meaning orphans and their families are increasingly reliant on support from humanitarian organisations to survive.
