The devastating earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan on 31 August has now killed more than 1,400 people and injured over 3,100, according to local authorities.
Early reports have shown that the Chawkay and Nurgal districts in Kunar province, and Dara-e-Nur district in Nangarhar province are the most heavily affected areas.
Rescue operations in Kunar province have been complicated further after a second tremor, measuring between 5.2 and 5.5-magnitude, struck Mazar Canyon in Nurgal, deepening the humanitarian emergency in an already difficult to reach region.
Immediate needs
Across Chawkay and Nurgal, entire villages have been flattened, displacing thousands, leaving them with little or no access to health or aid services.

Initial findings have also found that 88% of health facilities across Chawkay and Nurgal are non-functional, while 95% of people are now without safe drinking water.
Immediate and urgent needs include the provision of emergency shelter items, such as tents, clean drinking water, food supplies and medical aid.
On the ground
Islamic Relief’s emergency teams were on the ground in Chawkay and Nurgal within hours of the earthquake striking.
We have established 2 emergency health centres, stocked with essential medicines, in the villages of Diwagal (Chawkay) and Mazar (Nurgal) to help provide survivors with life-saving medical care. We have also deployed an 2 ambulance for each health centre to help with the transport of injured people.
Our response has also included the distribution of 950 hygiene kits to support safe living conditions and reduce disease risks. We are also aiming to provide cash assistance in areas where local markets are still functional.
As more details emerge about the scale of this disaster, Islamic Relief will continue to stand by the vulnerable communities ripped apart by this earthquake.
