An Islamic Relief assessment in some of the villages worst hit by the Afghanistan earthquake has found 98% of buildings destroyed or damaged, and every family mourning extensive loss. Households have suffered an average of two people killed and three people injured by the deadly earthquake.
The assessment in Kunar province found 65% of buildings completely destroyed and 33% damaged, leaving just 2% standing without damage. Islamic Relief has set up two emergency health clinics for survivors in the affected region.
More than 1,400 people have so far been confirmed killed and over 3,000 injured by the 6.0 magnitude earthquake, which struck on Sunday night as people slept. A second earthquake of 5.5 magnitude struck the region Tuesday, further destabilising the villages.
Rahmat Shirzad, Islamic Relief’s communications coordinator in Afghanistan, said:
“Everyone is grieving. So many of us lost family in these earthquakes. Entire villages have been destroyed and some families have lost four, five, or six family members. The death toll is still rising as more bodies are uncovered and isolated mountain communities are contacted.
“Our latest needs assessment shows that in some of the worst affected villages, each household has suffered an average of two people killed and three people injured, and casualties are still rising. In these places 98% of the buildings are damaged or destroyed and livestock have been wiped out and you can see them buried in the mud.”
Islamic Relief was one of the first agencies to arrive on the ground just hours after the earthquake, and has established two emergency health clinics near affected communities in Kunar at Diwagal (Chawkay District) and Mazar (Nurgal District), which are served by two ambulances to bring the wounded to the sites for treatment.
Islamic Relief’s team on the ground is also preparing to distribute hygiene kits and cash assistance to hundreds of affected families.
The needs assessment was conducted in Kunar Province, covering the districts of Chawkay and Nurgal and seven villages—Badenzoy, Gagizoy, Gagizoy Sapara, Gagizoy Tangai, Ghazi Abad, Masoud, and Wadeer Ghazi Abad. The Islamic Relief survey team was dispatched to gather research just hours after the earthquake, as was the emergency response team.
