In 2024, Islamic Relief Worldwide spent more money than ever before to help support vulnerable people around the globe.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we ploughed £303.8 million into our life-saving and life-changing programmes, and to supporting the vital functions that keep them running.
Our 2024 Annual Report, published today, shows how we reached 14.5 million people across 38 countries in 2024 through emergency response, development and campaigning projects.
Despite rising costs of living worldwide, our donors continued to give generously, enabling us to maintain 2023’s record income of £275.6 million. This ensures the ability of multi-year projects to continue supporting communities.
2024 also saw Islamic Relief mark our 40th year of service. As we reflected on how far the organisation had come since our founding, we re-committed to tackling the deep and pressing needs that weigh on the many vulnerable communities we serve.
Responding to crises
Sadly, many of the crises that caused suffering in 2023 have continued into 2024 and beyond.
In Gaza, Palestinian families endured relentless bombing, displacement and scarcity of food, fuel and water. Our staff and partners on the ground worked tirelessly to deliver aid, including over 57 hot meals to displaced people. Throughout 2024, we pressed relentlessly for a ceasefire and an end to Israel’s blockade and its illegal occupation of Palestine.
In Sudan, over 11 million people were internally displaced by the end of 2024, with many struggling to find food for themselves and their families. We fed thousands of malnourished children and reached more than 1 million people across Sudan with support in a time of desperate need.
In December, the protracted crisis in Syria re-entered the headlines following the collapse of the previous regime, which had governed for more than 50 years. Islamic Relief called on international governments to lift sanctions to support rebuilding the country, while our staff in Syria continued to provide emergency aid.
Later that month, we marked 20 years since the 2024 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami in which some 230,000 people were killed. The scale of destruction and massive global response was unlike anything Islamic Relief had seen before. It marked the beginning of our work in Sri Lanka and a huge upscaling of our presence in Indonesia. Our work continues in both countries today.
Empowering communities
More than 4.6 million people received life-changing support through the 407 development projects we ran in 2024.
The generosity of our donors provided more than 97,700 orphaned children with life-changing sponsorship, while our seasonal Ramadan and qurbani programmes helped ease the hunger of more than 1 million and 3 million people respectively.
We supported over 1.6 million people with healthcare interventions and provided better access to water, sanitation and hygiene services to more than 1 million people.
Campaigning for change and nurturing strong partnerships
We continued campaigning for change worldwide, advocating for women and girls, amplifying the voices of refugees and displaced people and highlighting the fight for survival on the frontlines of the climate catastrophe.
In November, we were an active presence at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, representing an interfaith caucus at the conference, addressing the ministry plenary session and speaking at several side events.
Throughout 2024 worked with more than 40 local, national and international partner organisations to fund and deliver impactful projects across several continents.
We will continue to stand with vulnerable people
As we look back on the milestones of 2024, it is with an awareness that there is still so much that needs to be done.
At Islamic Relief, our commitment to standing with vulnerable people around the world remains unshaken. We will continue to offer support whenever and wherever it is needed most, developing our response to fit the changing needs of the communities we serve.
We sincerely thank our incredibly generous donors and partners for their continued support in these challenging times.
